GO BROOKLYN GO BROOKLYN is a multi-faceted group exhibition bringing together a diverse group of twelve artists from Brooklyn, NY and Charlotte, NC in an exploration and celebration of the relationship between the borough of Brooklyn in New York City and the historical Brooklyn neighborhood in Uptown Charlotte. Artist and guest curator Tim Okamura, a long-time resident of Brooklyn, NY was inspired to formulate this exhibition after a recent introduction to the Brooklyn neighborhood in Charlotte. Along with discovering the Brooklyn name came about as an homage to its northern counterpart, Mr. Okamura was intrigued by the area’s richly layered history of prosperity and progressive ideals, which he felt deserving of deeper examination through art.
GO BROOKLYN GO BROOKLYN will illuminate connections and delve into perceptions of the two Brooklyns, showcasing artwork influenced by lived experiences, often informed by family or social history, in a compelling spectrum of expression. A select group of established, mid-career and promising, emerging artists are contributing work that ranges from painted, narrative realism to fiber art and collage, to emotionally charged sculptural pieces. Some creators in this exhibition have chosen to spotlight and challenge stereotypes surrounding people and place, pointing to preconceived notions embedded in attitudes towards North and South. Other artists have captured a sense of reverence and optimism in their work.
Ultimately, in a time of uncertainty and divisiveness in America, GO BROOKLYN GO BROOKLYN aspires to highlight unity in diversity, especially as it relates to both shared and divergent history. This exhibition exemplifies the possibility of discovery and enlightenment that can result from meaningful creative dialogue; it is a purposeful collaboration of artists from two distinct, storied cities that tells a story of mutual respect.
