Tahsine’s work is a push and pull of critical thought — commenting on humanity, society, culture, identity, race, place, and our collective states of being. It is meant to visually represent the dualities that consistently coexist for humans and the spectrum of emotions in the spaces in between. With formal training in design and communications her artwork includes an aesthetic of the digital and analogue collage, using found lens-based imagery, typography, illustration, abstraction, repetition, wordplay, and prose. These multiple layers form a narrative of self-described self-portraiture with the intent of the viewer to see themselves as well as our shared humanity, experiences, and purpose in the work. Tahsine is a first-generation Canadian artist with cultural roots in East Africa, India, West Asia, and North America. Her name is Arabic and means to enrich or beautify, and therefore fitting that she is drawn to the arts, finding solace and expression in creating beautiful things with an overarching intent on progression and elevation.
